" Les chemins de fer, dans un avenir aujourd'hui peu éloigné, doivent faire disparaître certaines industries, en modifier quelques autres, et surtout celles qui concernent les différents modes de transport en usage pour les environs de Paris. Aussi, bientôt les personnes et les choses qui sont les éléments de cette Scène lui donneront-elles le mérite d'un travail d'archéologie. Nos neveux ne seront-ils pas en- chantés de connaître le matériel social d'une époque qu'ils nommeront le vieux temps ? Ainsi les pittoresques coucous qui stationnaient sur la place de la Concorde en encombrant le Cours-la-Reine, les coucous si florissants pendant un siècle, si nombreux encore en 1830, n'existent plus; et, par la plus attrayante solennité champêtre, à peine en aperçoit-on un sur la route en 1842. En 1842, les lieux célèbres par leurs sites et nommés Environs de Paris, ne possédaient pas tous un service de messageries régulier. Néanmoins les Touchard père et fils avaient conquis le mono- pole du transport pour les villes les plus populeuses, dans un rayon de quinze lieues; et leur entreprise constituait un magnifique établissement situé rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis. Malgré leur ancienneté, malgré leurs efforts, leurs capitaux et tous les avantages d'une centralisation puissante, les messageries Touchard trouvaient dans les coucous du Faubourg -Saint-Denis des concurrents pour les points situés à sept ou huit lieues à la ronde. La passion du Pari- sien pour la campagne est telle, que des entreprises locales luttaient aussi avec avantage contre les Petites-Messageries, nom donné à l'entreprise des Touchard par opposition à celui des Grandes-Messageries de la rue Montmartre. À cette époque le succès des Touchard stimula d'ailleurs les spéculateurs.
