About the Book

Sophie Rostopchine (Sofia Fiodorovna Rostoptchina) est, comme son nom l'indique, issue de l'aristocratie russe. Elle est née le 1er août 1799 à Saint-Pétersbourg et a passé son enfance dans le domaine familial Voronovo, près de Moscou (45 000 hectares, 4 000 serfs) En 1812, Napoléon vient apporter au peuple russe les bienfaits de la révolution française à la tête de sa Grande Armée. Le général Fiodor Vassilievitch Rostopchine, père de Sophie, est alors gouverneur de Moscou. Il fait incendier Moscou, ce qui provoquera la retraite de Napoléon et la disgrâce de Fiodor. Réduit à l'exil, Fiodor finit par s'installer à Paris où il fait venir sa famille. C'est là que Sophie épouse le 14 juillet 1819 le comte Eugène de Ségur, petit-fils du maréchal de Ségur. Ce mariage commença comme un mariage d'amour mais finit par s'avérer désastreux. Sophie se consolera en s'occupant de ses huit enfants puis de ses nombreux petits enfants. Plus tard, elle coucha par écrit les nombreuses histoires qu'elle avait inventées pour ses petits enfants. L'oeuvre de la comtesse de Ségur à bercé notre enfance. Qui de nous n'a pas plaint la pauvre Sophie et eu envie de lui dire qu'elle serait moins malheureuse si elle était plus sage. Ces romans font écho à l'enfance dorée de l'aristocratie dans un monde où déjà le temps de l'aristocratie prend fin. Mais cette enfance dorée se combine aussi à l'enfance malheureuse, mal aimée et maltraitée. Heureusement, le temps, la chance et l'amour sont là pour panser les plaies et apporter le bonheur à ceux qui ont su le mériter. Ces romans, c'est aussi la peinture d'une époque encore proche de la nôtre et déjà disparue, une époque où la révolution industrielle vient de commencer et où la technologie moderne n'a pas encore bouleversé la société en profondeur.
