Besonders institutionelle Anleger befinden sich in der Zwickmühle, denn sie benötigen konstante und berechenbare Cash-Flows. Der Grund dafür sind u.a. gesetzliche und bilanzielle Vorschriften. Lebensversicherungen müssen zum Beispiel (z.B.) einen Garantiezins von aktuell [1,75%] pro Jahr erwirtschaften. Das aktuelle Zinsumfeld ist dafür deutlich zu gering. Da der geforderte Ertrag nicht zu verdienen ist, bewegen sich institutionelle Anleger der riskanten Anlageform der Aktien zu. Jedoch ist ihr Sicherheitsbedürfnis zu stark ausgeprägt, um das ungesicherte Risiko einer Aktienanlage zu tragen. "Wer bereit ist ein höheres Risiko einzugehen, kann erwarten, dafür mit einer höheren Rendite belohnt zu werden". Dies ist wohl die bekannteste Aussage der modernen Portfoliotheorie und der Grund dafür, dass sich institutionelle Anleger Aktien zuwenden. Durch eine breite Streuung der Aktien lässt sich das unsystematische Risiko diversifizieren und auf das vergütete systematische Risiko reduzieren. Soweit die Theorie. Jedoch zeigen die letzten 25 Jahre mit mehreren Finanzmarktkrisen ein anderes Bild. Durch die benchmarkorientierten Anlagekonzepte der 90er und den ersten zehn Jahren des neuen Jahrtausends, gerieten absolute Verlustrisiken immer mehr in den Hintergrund. Besonders in den Jahren 2000 bis 2002 und 2008 führte dies zu erheblichen Verlusten. Das Konzept der Portfoliodiversifikation nach Markowitz ging nicht auf.
