About the Book

Consumer-originated information technologies (IT) increasingly affect organizations as they now increasingly populate work-related activities, too. This has spawned research on ‘Bring Your Own Device’ policies for controlling consumer IT usage, essentially regulating the blend of private and business lives. Despite the value of past research, our theoretical understanding of IT consumerization is still in its infancy. This dissertation examines the corporate IT function’s relationship to consumer IT with special regard to aspects of IS Organization and Strategy, IT Governance, IT Security, Economic Psychology, and Social Theory. It proposes an integrative perspective on IT consumerization in which the separation between ‘business’ and ‘IT’ is questioned, and consumer IT originated developments are viewed from a more holistic standpoint. The findings have important implications for our understanding of the shifting relationship between IT and organizations and suggest that corporate IT departments may go through three different stages of responding to IT consumerization.
