Le grand inconnu Les histoires qu'on va lire m'ont été racontées par le même individu aux nerfs irritables qui m'apprit l'anecdote romanesque du gros Monsieur, publiée dans le Château de Brace-Bridge Il est bien singulier qu'on s'obstine toujours à me regarder comme le témoin de cette aventure, quand j'ai pris soin d'affirmer d'une manière positive qu'on m'en a fait le récit, et quand j'ai donné le signalement du narrateur. Je proteste que jamais rien de semblable n'est arrivé en ma présence. Je n'aurais pas songé cependant à me plaindre, si l'auteur de Waverley, dans son Introduction au roman de Pévéril du Pic, n'avait prétendu qu'il était lui-même le personnage dont on citait l'embonpoint. Depuis lors, j'ai été constamment importuné par les questions et les lettres de plusieurs lecteurs, et surtout d'une infinité de dames, qui ont voulu savoir ce que j'ai vu du Grand Inconnu.
About the Author: Washington Irving est le plus jeune des onze enfants d'un riche négociant. Son prénom lui a été donné en hommage àGeorge Washington. Très tôt, il développe une passion pour les livres, dévorant Robinson Crusoé ou les Mille et une nuits.Avocat, il étudie le droit en privé dans les bureaux d'Henry Masterton (1798), Brockholst Livingston (1801) et John Ogde Hoffman (1802), mais ne pratique que brièvement. De 1804 à 1806, il voyage à travers l'Europe, visitant Marseille, Gênes, la Sicile (où il voit l'amiral anglais Nelson) et Rome. À son retour aux États-Unis, en 1806, Irving est admis au barreau deNew York. Il monte avec ses frères une entreprise (qui devait s'effondrer en 1818). Pendant la guerre de 1812, Irving assiste militairement le gouverneur de New York, Tompkins, dans l'armée américaine. La carrière littéraire d'Irving débute dans la presse. Il contribue, entre 1802 et 1803, à The Morning Chronicle, qui est édité par son frère Peter, puis, entre 1807 et 1808, à Salmagundi, écrivant en collaboration avec son frère William et James Kirke Paulding. De 1812 à 1814, il est rédacteur à l'Analetic magazine, à Philadelphie et à New York. En 1809 paraît une Histoire de New York racontée par Dietrich Knickerbocker (qui est censé être un excentrique étudiant américain d'origine hollandaise), évocation fantaisiste des premières années de Manhattan à l'époque de la colonie hollandaise.
