Où roulions-nous maintenant, tassés dans l'ombre de ce fiacre extraordinairement silencieux, dont les roues, pas p!us que les sabots du cheval, n'éveillaient de bruit sur le pavé de bois des rues et le macadam des avenues désertes ? Où allions-nous le long de ces quais et de ces berges inconnues à peine éclairés çà et là par la lanterne falote d'un antique réverbère ? Depuis longtemps déjà nous avions perdu de vue la fantastique silhouette de Notre-Dame se profilant de l'autre côté du fleuve sur un ciel de plomb. Quai Saint-Michel, quai de la Tournelle, quai de Bercy même, nous étions loin de l'avenue de l'Opéra, des rues Drouot, Le Peletier et du centre. Nous n'allions même pas à Bullier, où les vices honteux tiennent leurs assises et, s'évadant sous le masque, tourbillonnent presque démoniaques et cyniquement avoués les nuits de mardi-gras, et mon compagnon se taisait. Au bord de cette Seine taciturne et pâle, sous l'enjambement de ponts de plus en plus rares, le long de ces quais plantés de grands arbres maigres aux branchages écartés comme des doigts de mort une peur irraisonnée me prenait, une peur aggravée par le silence inexplicable de Jakels; j'en arrivai à douter de sa présence et à me croire auprès d'un inconnu. La main de mon compagnon avait saisi la mienne, et, quoique molle et sans force, la tenait dans un étau qui me broyait les doigts... Cette main de puissance et de volonté me clouait les paroles dans la gorge et je sentais sous son étreinte toute velléité de révolte fondre et se dissoudre en moi; nous roulions maintenant hors des fortifications, par des grandes routes bordées de haies et de mornes devantures de marchands de vins, guinguettes de barrières depuis longtemps closes; nous filions sous la lune qui venait enfin d'écorner une bande de nuages et semblait répandre sur cet équivoque paysage de banlieue une nappe grésillante de mercure et de sel; à ce moment il me sembla que les roues du fiacre, cessant d'être fantômes, criaient dans les pierrailles et les cailloux du chemin. C'est là, murmurait la voix de mon compagnon, nous sommes arrivés, nous pouvons descendre, et comme je balbutiais un timide: Où sommes-nous ? - Barrière d'Italie, hors des fortifications, nous avons pris la route la plus longue, mais la plus sûre, nous reviendrons par une autre demain.
