Issu de la nuit des temps, l'univers arabo-persan des "Mille et Une Nuits" est un enchaînement sans fin de contes merveilleux animés par la malicieuse Shéhérazade, où surgissent Ali Baba, Aladin, le marin Sindbad, Kamar et Boudour... Ces récits furent transmis pendant des siècles de bouche à oreille, puis recopiés sur de précieux parchemins entre Bagdad, l'Égypte et la Syrie. Leur illustration, cependant, provient principalement d'Occident, où ce trésor de fables fut découvert, traduit et publié au début du XVIIIe siècle avec un succès foudroyant et servit de canevas fréquent pour la littérature européenne, la peinture, l'opéra-comique, le théâtre et le ballet. Puis vint le cinéma. Champion de la culture de masse moderne, le septième art a joué un rôle prépondérant dans la propagation universelle de ces contes grâce à son apport bien spécifique fait de sauts spatio-temporels, d'ubiquité, de recréations et métamorphoses en tous genres, par cette magie illimitée de trucages qui leur confère une visibilité et un impact dramatique jusqu'alors inimaginables. Notre filmographie analytique se penche en détail sur cette production mondiale riche et variée, complétée par des récits parallèles souvent portés à l'écran tels que le voleur de Bagdad, le mendiant de "Kismet", le savetier du Caire, Hadji Baba d'Ispahan, le prince yéménite Hatimtai ou la fée Kalawali (prisée surtout en Inde). On y trouvera aussi toutes les transpositions audiovisuelles du "Livre des Rois (Shâh-Nâmeh)" de Firdousi et autres mythes de la Perse sassanide, de la légende du héros bédouin préislamique Antar, des amours tragiques de Kaïs / Madjnûn et Laila ainsi que des facéties du bouffon philosophe Nasreddin Hodja (ou Goha).
About the Author: Docteur ès lettres de l'Université de Munich et historien du cinéma, Hervé Dumont (*1943) a dirigé la Cinémathèque suisse à Lausanne de 1996 à 2008. Auteur de plusieurs monographies de cinéastes (W. S. Van Dyke, Robert Siodmak, Frank Borzage, William Dieterle) et d'une "Histoire du cinéma suisse. Films de fiction 1896-1965", il s'est spécialisé dans le cinéma d'histoire. "L'Antiquité au cinéma. Vérités, légendes et manipulations" a remporté le Prix du Syndicat français de la critique de cinéma (2010) et "Napoléon - L'Épopée en 1000 films" les Prix du Festival international du Film d'Histoire de Pessac et de la Fondation Napoléon à Paris en 2015.
