En Contra el anexionismo José Antonio Saco analiza en 1848 la historia de los movimientos políticos que pretendían la anexión de Cuba a los Estados Unidos.

Como indica su título, Contra el anexionismo es un alegato contra esta corriente política y una revisión de su historia. Se trató de un movimiento más arraigado de lo que se cree. Motivado por razones diversas.

Para unos anexionistas los Estados Unidos darían fuerza legal al sistema esclavista, habida cuenta de que en el sur de ese país era una práctica legal. Para otros sería una coartada para separar a Cuba de España sin derramamientos de sangre.

Años después de la aparición de este libro, durante la presidencia de Juan Prim, tras la Revolución liberal española, se planteó que los Estados Unidos fuesen el garante de un pago a España para que esta sanease sus arcas. A cambio la metrópolis se comprometería a entregar la soberanía de la Isla a los cubanos.

A continuación citamos un fragmento de esta obra en que Saco identifica los orígenes del anexionismo en Cuba:

En 1837 quedó Cuba enteramente esclavizada. Ni las cortes ni el gobierno, que la despojaron de todos sus derechos, cumplieron la promesa de darle instituciones especiales. Pasaba un año tras otro, y ella sufría en silencio todos los males del despotismo. Buscábales un remedio; pero al mismo tiempo conocía que sus propias fuerzas no eran bastantes para conseguirlo. Aumentaba su dolor el ejemplo de su metrópoli, que ya empezaba a gozar de alguna libertad; y este contraste, tan injusto como humillante, avivaba en Cuba los deseos de mejorar de condición. Por otra parte, en la vecindad de aquella antilla existe un pueblo que presenta un espectáculo seductor. Su inmensa libertad, y su extraordinario y rápido engrandecimiento son estímulos muy difíciles de resistir; y para completar la seducción de los cubanos, la esclavitud de la raza negra fue sancionada en las instituciones de los Estados Unidos, viniendo de esta manera a identificarse en punto tan vital para Cuba los intereses de sus hijos con los de aquella república.
