About the Book

The catalog features more than eighty works by the American William Copley (1919-1996), who as gallery owner, artist, author, and publisher, operated as an important mediator between the surrealists and the pop art movement since the mid-1940s and was one of the most unconventional personalities in the art scene. Tying in with the tradition of Dada, Surrealism, and American pop art, his paintings are an ironic examination of the erotic game played by men and women. The catalog includes numerous unpublished essays by Copley, and several of his works are presented for the first time.

About the Author: Götz Adriani (born 1940 in Stuttgart, Germany)is art histrion and has been director of Museum Kunsthalle Tübingen, Germany from 1971 until 2005. He has published e.g. on Cezanne, Renoir, Beuys. Today he works as freelance curator.

William Nelson Copley (born 1919 in New York City - 1996 in Key West) was an American artist who signed his Surrealist style paintings CPLY. He directed the Copley Gallery in 1947-1948.

Andrew Warhola (born 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA - 1987 in New York City), known as Andy Warhol, was an American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art.

Georg Baselitz (born 1938) is a German painter who studied in the former East Germany, before moving to what was then the country of West Germany. Baselitz's style is interpreted by the Northern American as Neo-Expressionist, but from a European perspective, it is seen as postmodern.

Man Ray (1890 - 1976), born Emmanuel Radnitzky, was an American artist who spent most of his career in Paris, France. Perhaps best described simply as a modernist, he was a significant contributor to both the Dada and Surrealist movements,
