About the Book

English summary: Tome IV (vol. 5) of the Hermogenian Corpus Rhetoricum is dedicated to the second book of this corpus, a treatise on style, derived from a treatise on the Progymnasmata, which deals with invention. The text, which deals with the stylistic categories of the discourse, is supplemented here by prolegomena and synopses. The doctrine of style that the Hermogenian expose identifies with is of 2nd century AD tradition. The core of its subject is derived from numerous monographs dedicated to the orators of the classic era. However, it is the ancient theory of virtues of narration that allows for an organization of the subject and a characterization of style. This volume represents the exposes of the new doctrine (prior to Hermogenus) through the apocryphal treatises attributed to the Aelius Aristides. French text. French description: Le tome IV (vol.
