About the Book

: "The Cossacks" by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1863, tells the story of Dmitry Olenin, an idealist who leaves Moscow for a new life in the Caucasus. He befriends a Cossack named Eroshka and falls in love with Maryanka, who is promised to another Cossack, Luka. Influenced by a Russian named Beletsky, Olenin's ideals are corrupted, leading to a complex love triangle. Luka is wounded in a conflict with Chechens, and Olenin's unsuccessful pursuit of Maryanka results in his departure, realizing the inaccessibility of his idealized love. About The Author: Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), a renowned Russian writer, authored masterpieces like War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Born into aristocracy, he gained literary acclaim with works such as Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth. Experiencing a moral crisis in the 1870s, he embraced Christian anarchism and pacifism, influencing figures like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. His literary impact and Nobel Prize controversies endure. Aylmer Maude (1858–1938) and Louise Maude (1855–1939) were English translators of Leo Tolstoy's writings. Aylmer, a friend of Tolstoy, authored his biography, "The Life of Tolstoy." Having lived in Russia for years, the Maudes dedicated their remaining lives in England to translating Tolstoy's works and fostering public interest in them. Aylmer Maude also actively participated in various progressive and idealistic causes in the early 20th century.
