About the Book

Francisco Cervantes de Salazar escribió la Crónica de la Nueva España alrededor de 1560, por encargo del rey Felipe II. Sin embargo permaneció inédita hasta 1914. Esta obra destaca por sus datos sobre las culturas indígenas autóctonas, de gran valor antropológico, y por la visión que ofrece sobre la conquista y la gesta de Hernán Cortés.


Además de su cercanía con la cultura mexicana, Cervantes de Salazar tuvo como referencias para este libro

las Cartas de relación, del propio Cortés,

la Historia general de las Indias y conquista de México, de Francisco López de Gómara

y sin duda alguna, tuvo que consultar las Cartas de relación que Hernán Cortés mandó a los reyes de España.

El único manuscrito con el que contamos está dividido, a su vez, en seis libros, el último de ellos incompleto.

Linkgua Ediciones ha editado la obra de Cervantes de Salazar en dos volúmenes.


El primero comprende del libro I al libro III. En el segundo volumen encontramos del libro IV al VI.

En el primero Cervantes de Salazar nos describe la naturaleza, el terreno y las costumbres de la ciudad.

Para los siguientes dos libros, las crónicas toman un tinte un poco más político. El segundo libro comienza con el descubrimiento de la Nueva España y relata cómo fue el primer contacto de Cortés con Moctezuma. Pero no por eso abandona su carácter descriptivo, pues en los capítulos y libros siguientes, Cervantes de Salazar escribe sobre los terrenos y edificios que Cortés vio al llegar a las ciudades mexicas.

Francisco Cervantes de Salazar (Toledo,​ c. 1513-1518-Ciudad de México, 14 de noviembre de 1575) inició sus estudios en Salamanca, completando su formación académica en Flandes e Italia. Fue nombrado secretario del presidente del Consejo de Indias y se trasladó a México, donde redactó la Crónica de la Nueva España.

Ocupó la cátedra de retórica en la Universidad mexicana de reciente creación, doctorándose en Teología. Fue ordenado sacerdote y obtuvo una canonjía en la catedral, hasta su fallecimiento.

Cervantes de Salazar fue uno de los intelectuales españoles más importantes afincados en el virreinato de la Nueva España, su obra siempre estuvo vinculada a la corriente intelectual del humanismo renacentista europeo.
