Cuentos trágicos que incluye el magistral relato "El pozo de la vida", fueron publicados en la prensa periódica entre 1902 y 1911, y reunidos por su autora en un volumen en 1912. Fue la última obra que publicó en vida La crítica coincide en señalar que lo mejor de la producción literaria de Emilia Pardo Bazán son sus cuentos, por la valentía, modernidad, concisión y brevedad a la hora de presentar situaciones y personajes. La vigencia y actualidad de sus relatos cortos demuestran que "no hay épocas ni corrientes ni compartimentos estancos en el tiempo, sino que hay temperamentos y sensibilidades, que están vivos o no". En ellos, la genial escritora gallega nos introduce en su mundo narrativo más interesante, en el que ficciones de la más variada temática logran alcanzar un dramático e inesperado desenlace.
About the Author: EMILIA PARDO BAZÁN nació en La Coruña en 1851 y murió en Madrid en 1921. Fue una escritora extraordinariamente prolífica y versátil. Su obra se extiende a lo largo de 38 novelas, siete obras de teatro, numerosos poemas, veinte volúmenes de ensayo y crítica, diez libros de viajes, decenas de conferencias y discursos, un millar largo de artículos periodísticos y... dos espléndidos libros de cocina. Además de todo eso, una producción cuentística que se estima en torno a los seiscientos relatos, y que, a juicio de la crítica, constituye lo más señero de su creación. Lectora empedernida y viajera infatigable, conoció en París a los hermanos Goncourt, a Daudet y a Émile Zola, padre del Naturalismo, cuyos principios trasladó a la España decimonónica. Estuvo permanentemente en contacto con la intelectualidad de su época: Rosalía de Castro, Zorrilla, Blasco Ibáñez, Unamuno, Menéndez Pelayo, entre otros, formaron parte de su círculo literario. Catedrática de la Universidad de Madrid desde 1916 hasta su muerte, en 1921, fue asimismo presidenta de la sección de Literatura del Ateneo de Madrid y Consejera de Instrucción Pública. Junto con Galdós y Clarín, la condesa de Pardo Bazán es una de las escritoras más representativas de la narrativa española del siglo XIX.
