About the Book

INTRODUCTON TO ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myeloid cells that make up the blood cells. The most common types of AML are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). AML is serious cancer that can lead to death if not treated.

AML is usually caused by a change (mutation) in one of the genes that make up the myeloid cells. The most common gene that is changed in AML is the BCR-ABL1 gene. BCR-ABL1 is a gene that is found on the surface of the myeloid cells. When this gene is changed, it can lead to the spread of cancer cells.
There are many types of treatments available for AML. The most common type of treatment is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a type of treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells.
Another common type of treatment for AML is radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is a type of treatment that uses radiation to kill cancer cells.
There is also a type of treatment called autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). ASCT is a treatment that uses the patient's own stem cells to cure AML. Stem cells are cells that can grow into any type of cell in the body.
Most people who have AML survive for at least a few years after their diagnosis. However, about 25% of people who have AML die from the disease. AML is serious cancer that needs to be treated as soon as it is diagnosed.
DEFINITION OF ALL
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of leukemia that starts in the white blood cells called myeloid cells. AML is serious cancer that can quickly spread to other parts of the body.
The cause of AML is not known, but it is thought to be a combination of genetics and environmental factors. People with AML often have a family history of the disease.
The most common symptoms of AML are fever, night sweats, fatigue, and aching muscles. If left untreated, AML can quickly spread to the bone, liver, and other parts of the body.
There is currently no cure for AML, but there are treatments that can help prolong the patient's life. Treatment options include chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and a bone marrow transplant.
