About the Book

"Dad", son of a Civil War Union soldier, and one of nine children was born on the family farm in eastern Nebraska in 1872. Dad was a farmer, a vagabond, an adventurer, but still and always a family man. "Dad's Reminiscences, Reveries, and Ruminations" was written in 1918 by Henry Frederick Cathcart while stationed in France in the US Army during World War One, where he served as a Mess Sergeant. It was there that he acquired the nick-name "Dad" because of his age, 46, which was far too old to become a new US Army recruit, (but "Dad" found a way.) "Dad's Reminiscences, Reveries and Ruminations is a compilation of true essays written by "Dad" in poetry form to be sent home in letters to his family back home. They reflect the reminiscences of a lifetime of adventure, misadventure, hardships, sadness, and romance. They mirror the attitudes and family-oriented culture that prevailed in America during the Victorian era in which "Dad" was raised.
About the Author: Henry Frederick Cathcart, b,1872 d.1947 was the son of a Union Civil veteran, the third of nine children. He was raised on a farm in eastern Nebraska and attended 8 grades in a one-room schoolhouse. Cathcart and his wife spent their early years going from farm to farm trying to scratch out a living and raising six children. After many years spent in the cold of Nebraska and other like places, Dad headed south to Florida to escape the harsh winters. That is where he was when the "Great War" broke out. Hearing the call of patriotism, and although Cathcart was over-age for enlistment in the US Army, he was determined to "do his part", so he managed to finagle his way in as a new army recruit. It was while in France that Cathcart, nicknamed "Dad" by fellow recruits, because of his age, composed these true stories, written in poetry form, which he sent back home in letters to his family.
