Über den Autor: 1863 in Ostpreußen als Apothekersohn geboren, 1875 nach Berlin übergesiedelt, bricht Arno Holz die Schule ohne Abschluss ab und lebt als freier Schriftsteller in wirtschaftlich schwierigen Verhältnissen im Berliner Wedding. Seine Lyrik entwickelt sich ab 1885 um die soziale Frage herum, er tritt dem naturalistischen Literaturverein Durch! bei und wird in der literarischen Avantgarde, die ihn trotz junger Jahre halb liebevoll, halb spöttisch Papa Holz nennt, ein ebenso aktiver wie sendungsbewußter Mann. Kunst=Natur-X ist die Formel, auf die Holz das Ziel künstlerischen Schaffens bringt. 1887 zieht er mit seinem Freund Johannes Schlaf zusammen und schreibt gemeinsam mit ihm unter dem Pseudonym Bjarne P. Holmsen eine Reihe naturalistischer Werke bis sie sich über die Aufteilung der kargen Honorare in einem öffentlich geführten Streit entzweien. Er erhält die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität Königsberg, wird Mitglied der Preußischen Akademie der Künste zu Berlin und als Kandidat für den Literatur-Nobelpreis nominiert. Alfred Döblin schreibt über Arno Holz: Er war bis zuletzt eine Lehrernatur, ein Mann, der etwas bestimmt wußte und es demonstrierte. Arno Holz starb am 26.10.1929 in Berlin.
