Estratto: ...dell'arte, un sentimento di equita rarissimo; poi dialoghi, schizzi, polemiche letterarie, articoli, bibliografie; una produzione continua, gittata qua e la sui giornali politici, sulle riviste, nelle strenne, dappertutto. Egli fu applaudito e lodato, i lettori lo amarono, ebbe qualcuna di quelle solite lettere che i sommi si degnano di scrivere per incoraggiamento ai neofiti, gli amici dissero: Mario diventera, diventera... i giornali gli rivolsero quell'atroce insulto, espresso con le volgari parole: vi e della stoffa.... In casa sua, invece, vi era la miseria. Vivevano magramente con una pensione della madre, pensione che se raggiungeva, non superava certo le cento lire. Intanto per vestirsi, per saziare la fame dopo si lungo lavoro, per acquistar libri, giornali e riviste, per avere una cameretta da studio, per avere un paio di guanti, per dare un abito di lana nera ogni anno alla madre, ci volevano danari: appunto, di danari ce ne erano pochissimi. Spesso accadeva al giovine di dover scrivere coi nervi esaltati da un pranzo troppo frugale; spesso, nelle gelide notti d'inverno, le mani e la fantasia si gelavano nella camera senza fuoco; talvolta mancavano i soldi per comprare il petrolio, talvolta non vi era carta nel tiretto o si doveva versar l'acqua nel calamaio inaridito. Cerco di guadagnare qualche cosa, vergognandosi di aver ventiquattro anni e di essere inutile; quante umiliazioni, quanti rossori, quanti disinganni gli tocco subire, prima di strappare una cartina di cinque lire! E dovette consacrarsi esclusivamente alla letteratura spicciola, agli articoli leggeri, brevi, divertenti, alle novelline in due numeri, ai lavoretti minuti, alla chincaglieria che il pubblico preferisce alla coltura: se no, niente. I lettori non vogliono romanzi lunghi, non vogliono piagnistei, non vogliono seccaggini, non vogliono filosofia, fisiologia, analisi, vogliono essere divertiti: -gli dicevano i suoi direttori. I giornali e gli amici andavano...
