Georgius Everhardus Rumphius, auch Georg Eberhard Rumpf (geboren 1627 in Wölfersheim, gestorben 13. Juni 1702 im Kastell Victoria, Insel Ambon, Molukken, Niederländisch-Indien). Er war ein deutsch-niederländischer Offizier und Verwaltungsbeamter, Botaniker, Naturforscher und Forschungsreisender. Sein offizielles botanisches Autorenkürzel lautet "Rumph.". Er diente von 1645 bis 1648 als Soldat der niederländischen Armee in Portugal. Anschließend trat er als Offizier in den Dienst der "Niederländischen Ostindien-Kompanie" und kam 1653 auf die Molukken-Insel Ambon. Während dieser Zeit bei der Kolonialadministration widmete er sich naturkundlichen Expeditionen und erhielt schließlich von der deutschen Akademie Leopoldina den Beinamen "Plinius Indicus". In seinem Werk "Amboinische Raritätenkammer" beschrieb er tropische Schalentiere, Muscheln und Mineralien. 1669/1670 erblindete er am Grauen Star, was ihm seinen Beinamen "Blinder Seher von Ambon" einbrachte; 1674 verlor er bei einem Tsunami seine Ehefrau und zwei kleine Töchter; 1687 brannte seine Bibliothek ab. Er ließ sich niemals entmutigen und arbeitete unbeirrt weiter. Seine Manuskripte wurden von den Direktoren der Vereinigten Ostindischen Kompanie jahrzehntelang unter Verschluss gehalten und nicht zur Veröffentlichung freigegeben.
