Damiano ebbe il cuore di non ispiegare qual fosse il segreto di siffatto incontro al principale, che, sospettando qualche cosa, ripeteva le inchieste; ne la sera, quando torno a casa, ne fiato co' suoi, quantunque la sola vista di quell'uomo avesse rinfrescata nel fondo del suo animo la vecchia ruggine e il primo dolore di un insulto non rincacciato in gola a chi lo fece. Egli, in faccia a quell'uomo senti per un minuto la gioja d'averlo quasi fatto sprofondar nella vergogna con un'occhiata, con un sogghigno; ma, passata codesta fiera volutta d'un istante, la memoria del passato prese a tormentarlo, e ne fu per piu giorni travagliato. Non era corsa piu d'una settimana da quell'incontro di mal augurio, quando un di, poco prima dell'imbrunire, partendosi dal negozio innanzi la solita ora, e sboccando nella piazza Fontana all'angolo della casa, ove continuava a dimorar la famiglia, gli parve vedere svoltar nel portone un'altra persona, colla quale da lungo tempo non s'era incontrato. Era colui ch'egli riguardava a ragione come l'autore di tutto il male ch'era toccato a' suoi, l'unica persona forse, per la quale egli si fosse sentito capace d'odio; in una parola, il signor Omobono. Al solo vederlo, una folla di pensieri gli occupo la mente; il cuore gli batte piu rapido: e raddoppio il passo dietro a lui. Aveva subito indovinato che quell'uom tristo, cogliendo la congiuntura della sua assenza, non aveva temuto di ritornare in casa sua; pieno di sospetto che non fosse la prima volta, e che sua madre, debole troppo, potesse dar fede ancora alle di lui infamie, cieco dalla rabbia che...
