Le petit Peter a grandi; il est devenu un homme de cet âge où l'on se fait appeler 'jeune homme' par des gens éduqués et 'petit dadais' par ceux qui aiment la vérité, ou en d'autres termes: il est entré dans l'adolescence. Son horizon reste dominé par ce paradis enchanté et insouciant que constituent la ferme familiale, les immenses forêts de sapins, mélèzes et épicéas, les alpages et les prairies, mais il s'élargit. Ce gamin curieux de tout veut tout simplement découvrir la vie, découvrir le monde.

En son for intérieur, Peter est resté le même garçon paisible, observateur alerte, toujours un peu gauche, un peu timide, un peu candide. En grandissant, il se voit confier de nouvelles responsabilités. Ses parents l'envoient par exemple dans la vallée de la Mürz tantôt pour chercher la joie de Noël (probablement le récit le plus célèbre de cette série), tantôt pour acheter de l'huile de lapin. Il part en pèlerinage avec un oncle, découvre avec fascination les chemins de fer et monte dans un train à vapeur. Une autre fois, il se fait inviter au repas du Nouvel An d'un riche maître des forges. Il participe avec ferveur à une mission évangélique dans une commune voisine, mais se pose également ses premières questions d'ordre religieux. Il s'affirme aussi de plus en plus, en s'appropriant par exemple le rôle d'instituteur auprès des autres enfants de son village ou en se rendant tout seul dans la lointaine capitale Vienne parce qu'il veut - rencontrer l'empereur!

Ce deuxième tome de Waldheimat - Dans ma forêt natale est une belle suite qui s'inscrit dans cette oeuvre autobiographique et magistrale de l'écrivain Peter Rosegger (1843-1918). Enfin, ce texte a été intégralement traduit en français et annoté, faisant ainsi revivre le monde doublement disparu de la petite paysannerie autrichienne du milieu du XIXe siècle ainsi que celui de l'adolescence innocente, heureuse, mais riche en questionnements. Un chef d'oeuvre classique qui mêle candeur, douce nostalgie, humour et autodérision ainsi qu'une grande poésie et fait découvrir un paradis révolu, perdu, gardé vivant par la plume d'un grand écrivain.
