Questo volume a cura di Elisabetta Longari dà forma alla volontà dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera di rendere omaggio alla figura di Dario Trento, qui stimato docente per molti anni e impegnato anche sul fronte dello studio e della valorizzazione del patrimonio storico. Il libro, che riunisce contributi di chi - artista, storico dell'arte, ex allievo - ha avuto con Dario scambi intellettuali frequenti oppure ha condiviso con lui interessi per medesimi argomenti, è testimonianza della sua ampiezza di interessi e della sua profondità di pensiero. I suoi studi si rivolgono alla pittura del Cinquecento lombardo (i leonardeschi e in particolare Bernardino Luini) e a quella toscana (specialmente Pontormo) come alla scultura dei Sacri Monti. Interessi coltivati parallelamente a quelli per l'arte contemporanea, da Vasco Bendini a Sergio Romiti, da Carol Rama a Vittoria Chierici, da Pirro Cuniberti a Beppe Devalle. Il taglio critico di Trento era molto originale e strettamente connesso con le problematiche del tempo presente. Con i contributi di: Giovanni Iovane, Elisabetta Longari, Claudio Lapesa, Lorenzo Gatti, Gianni Contessi, Emi Ligabue, Carlo Falciani, Ivo Bonacorsi, Flavio Fergonzi, Nataly Maier, Giacomo Agosti, Claudio Cerritelli, Massimo Maracci, Vincenzo Gheroldi, Mauro Manzoni, Massimo Hanninen, Marco De Sanctis, Giovanni Meda Riquier, Sandro Scarrocchia, Riccardo Garolla, Leonardo Genovese, Anna Mariani, Guido Scarabottolo, Chiara Nenci, Roberto Casiraghi, Emanuel Sacchini, Vittoria Chierici e Dario Trento. Dario Trento (Sommacampagna 1953 - Milano 2015), ha studiato Discipline delle arti all'Università di Bologna dove si è laureato nel 1979 con una tesi sul Diario di Pontormo. Nell'anno accademico 1980-1981 ha ottenuto una borsa di studio presso la Fondazione Longhi di Firenze, dove ha proseguito le sue ricerche su Pontormo. Dal 1986 ha insegnato nelle Accademie di Belle Arti di Bologna, Torino e Milano dove in particolare si è occupato di ordinare e valorizzare il patrimonio artistico. I suoi studi spaziano dalla pubblicazione Benvenuto Cellini: opere esposte e documenti notarili (1990) al concepimento e curatela della mostra sull'Ultima cena di Leonardo, tenutasi nel 2010 a Brera, in cui si dava conto della fortuna iconografica del capolavoro leonardesco fino a Warhol.
