The author touches on the inner workings of law enforcement and its responsibilities in the crime fighting effort. He has a strong belief in developing and maintaining a positive community partnership. About the Author: Arthur J. Washington was born on April 5, 1949 in Millry, Alabama and grew up in Miami, Florida. He began his career in law enforcement in August 1972 with the City of Miami Police Department and advanced through the ranks of Police Officer, Investigator, Sergeant, Administrative Assistant to Deputy Chief of Field Operations, Administrative Assistant to Assistant Chief of Investigations, Lieutenant, Major, and Retired Assistant Chief. After retirement from twenty-five years of service with the City of Miami Police Department, he was appointed Chief of Police of the Florida City Police Department. Following his tenure in Florida City, he was appointed Assistant Chief of the Field Operations Division at the North Miami Police Department, North Miami, Florida. Succeeding law enforcement, he worked in the field of security as Branch Manager with Empirical Protective Services of Winter Park, Florida, and as Director/Consultant for GuardOne Security, Miami, Florida. Chief Washington holds a Bachelor's degree from Florida International University, of Miami, Florida and has acquired several hours towards his Masters degree in Public Administration. He is a graduate of the prestigious Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, Executive Officer Development Course at Pennsylvania State University, and graduate of the Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education course at Louisiana State University. He has also attended numerous management, leadership, command, supervision, and advanced training seminars throughout his career. Chief Washington and his wife, Laura, have four children: Cheri, Arthur Jr., Chandra and Chante, as well as eight grandchildren. Chief Washington was formerly a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Florida Sheriffs Association, Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police (Executive Board), National Organization of Black Law Executives, and Florida Chapter President, 1994-1995.
