Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Diese Arbeit untersucht das Bild Mexikos im Werk Graham Greenes anhand seiner journalistischen Essays und Kurzgeschichten, seines Reiseberichts The Lawless Roads (1939) und des Romans The Power and the Glory (1940). Obwohl die Relation zwischen den großepischen Werken hinsichtlich der Quellenfunktion des Reiseberichts für den Roman eine bereits von der Literaturwissenschaft vielfach diskutierte und in den Ergebnissen redundante Fragestellung darstellt, bemühen sich nur wenige Forschungsarbeiten um eine umfangreichere Analyse der Darstellung Mexikos und berücksichtigen selten Greenes gesamten mexikanischen Textkorpus. Dieser Tendenz versucht diese Arbeit entgegenzuwirken, indem der Reisebericht vor allem wegen des Milieus und der historischen Argumentation sowie der autobiographischen Bedeutung berücksichtigt wird, während der Roman auf einer symbolischen Ebene die Transformation dieser Reiseeindrücke darstellt. Aufgrund der Essays und Kurzgeschichten wird eine eindeutige Aussage über Greenes Darstellung des mexikanischen Landes erwartet. Diese Arbeit unterstützt den von der jüngeren Literaturwissenschaft verfolgten mehrdimensionalen Interpretationsansatz und strebt an, diesen hinsichtlich der Mexikothematik zu konkretisieren. Graham Greene wird zu Recht als ein bedeutender katholischer Schriftsteller bezeichnet, der in seinen großen Romanen, zu denen auch das in dieser Arbeit berücksichtigte Werk zu zählen ist, eine ernsthafte Auseinandersetzung mit den Dogmen und der katholischen Frömmigkeit verfolgt. Der zunehmende Abstand von der religiös dominierten Deutung des Werkes ist dennoch als zweckmäßig zu erachten, da bereits in der mexikanischen Thematik religiöse und politische Aspekte miteinander verflochten sind. Gerade hinsichtlich der expliziten Fragestellung dieser Arbeit erweist sich ein ausschließlich religiöser Deutungsansatz als zu restriktiv und könnte nur einen Teil des mexikanischen Gesamtbildes berücksichtigen.
