Der Ich- Erzähler berichtet hier von seinen Träumen und wahnhaften Vorstellungen, die sich stets zwischen Realität und Traumwelt bewegen. Die Beschreibung dieser Erfahrungen stellt den Hauptanspruch des Textes dar, während sich die Handlung statisch auf nur wenige Orte beschränkt, wie beispielsweise die Straßen, sowie ein Friedhof der Stadt Paris, die Wohnungen von Freunden und eine Nervenheilanstalt. Um bei der Analyse des Textes Zusammenhänge besser einordnen zu können, seien an dieser Stelle noch einige biographische Fakten zum Leben Gérard de Nervals erwähnt. So war der junge Gérard schon früh alleingelassen worden, nachdem es Vater und Mutter im Zuge der napoleonischen Kriege nach Schlesien verschlug. Nach dem Tod seiner Mutter holt ihn der zurückgekehrte Vater, mit dem Nerval aufgrund dessen strenger Disziplinvorstellungen nie ein gutes Verhältnis haben wird, von seinem Onkel aus der Region Vallois nach Paris, wo er sich nach dem Schulabschluss und der Übersetzung des Faust mit anderen literarischen Kollegen, wie etwa Victor Hugo, Théophile Gautier, oder Alexandre Dumas, einen bohemischen Lebensstil aneignet. Dies beinhaltet Reisen durch Europa- mehrere Male vor allem durch Deutschland-, und den Orient, außerdem die unerwiderte Liebe zur Schauspielerin Jenny Colon. Aufgrund von Wahnvorstellungen verzeichnet Nerval bis zu seinem Selbstmord 1855 viele Aufenthalte in Nervenheilanstalten, unter anderem des Dr. Esprit Blanche am Pariser Montmartre.
