Held der Geschichte ist der 11-jährige Kristof Gerlacher, meist Krissi genannt, der zusammen mit seiner altersgleichen Clique Radrennen nach dem Muster der "Tour de France" veranstaltet. Zu dieser Clique gehören Tobias Eisenberger, der das Sagen hat, Linus Haberkorn, wegen seiner geringen Größe Krümel genannt, Norbert Monkebein, der gerne hilft, aber nicht gerne etwas sagt, weil er stottert, sowie Sophia und Celine, die einzigen Mädchen in der Gruppe. Kristof, entdeckt beim Stromern mit seinem Hund Männe neben dem Wasserturm das von Unkraut und Buschwerk überwucherte finstere und modrige Kellergewölbe einer zerbombten Munitionsfabrik. In ihm hält sich der junge Tippelbruder Bodo versteckt. Er ist krank und wurde dabei ertappt, als er im Supermarkt Hustenbonbons und Lebensmittel geklaut hat. Eine ältere Kundin hat sich für ihn eingesetzt und erreicht, dass die Kassiererin nicht die Polizei gerufen hat. Jugendliche Neonazis haben ihn beim Diebstahl beobachtet und bedrohen ihn vor dem Laden, sie werden ihn "alle machen" und die Stadt von solchem Gesindel säubern.Kristof hat Mitleid mit Bodo und versorgt ihn heimlich. Unter dem Siegel höchster Verschwiegenheit weiht er Tobias in sein Geheimnis ein. Kristofs Mutter beobachtet das seltsame Verhalten ihres Sohnes; sie scheint mehr zu ahnen und zu wissen, als Kristof lieb ist und bringt beträchtliche Unruhe in sein Leben. Als Kristof sich bei Bodo, dessen Gesundheitszustand immer bedenklicher wird, ansteckt und selber krank wird, übernimmt Tobias die Versorgung Bodos. Es bleibt nicht aus, dass schließlich auch die übrigen Jungen der Clique in sein Geheimnis eingeweiht werden. Als Kristof erfährt, dass der alte Wasserturm in wenigen Tagen gesprengt werden soll, spitzt sich die Situation dramatisch zu.
About the Author: Wilhelm Thoring, 1937 in Bottrop geboren, hat - nach einer handwerklichen Lehre - evangelische Theologie studiert. Zehn Jahre war er in zwei Berliner Gemeinden in der Jugend-, Erwachsenenarbeit und Verkundigung tatig, danach uber zwanzig Jahre Pastor in einer Dorfgemeinde im Munsterland.
