Das große Bestiarium Altenberg oder auch den Peter nannte man aus unbekannten Gründen die seltsame Laune Gottes, der hier ein Wesen schuf, das nur aus einem einzigen Organe bestand: aus einem Auge, dem der Fliegen gleich in tausend Fazetten zerlegt und die sichtbare Welt in kleinsten Bildern von großer Schärfe etwas übersichtig auffangend. Einem solchen seltsamen Wesen war von Natur aus nur eine kurze Lebensdauer bestimmt. Aber gegen die Natur und die Absicht Gottes bildete dieses stolz gewordene Auge so etwas wie einen Leib aus. Der war nun etwas schwächlich geraten, wie nicht anders zu erwarten, und das Auge Peter hatte mit ihm seine argen Molesten, die schließlich auch dem Auge nicht gut bekamen. Das Auge Peter hatte sich mit der Erzeugung seiner Verdauungs- und sonstigen Organe übernommen, und es sah am Ende nichts mehr als den prekären eigenen Mageninhalt: es spiegelte keine umgebende Welt mehr, sondern nur die Farben seiner Exkremente. Altenberg, Peter D'Annunzio. Ist er nicht des heutigen Italien Apoll, so doch dessen Pegasus, auf dem apollinisch für eine Weile die leichte Libelle Pascoli Platz nahm und den später dann der Clown Marinetti zu erklettern versuchte, ärschlings natürlich, wie es sich für den Clown gehört; doch blieben ihm von dem Versuch nur ein paar Schweifhaare in der Hand und auf dem Pegasus zu reiten wurde und blieb Futurismo. Der Pegasus d'Annunzio schlug mit seinen eleganten Hufen die herrlichsten, herrischesten Takte der letzten drei Jahrzehnte, ihm darin gleich nur des Northumberlandhirsches Swinburne Flug und Fougue. Später dann verlangte die Zeit Probe aufs große Wort, und der Pegasus gab sie. Er ließ sich die Hufe mit Eisen beschlagen, wirbelte damit die Trommel und wieherte Fanfaren. Die an tönenden Worten reichste Zeit, die des Krieges und seines Après, machte aus dem Pegasus nicht den Tyrtaios, aber das lauthinwiehernde Schlachtpferd gab den hellen italienischen Trompeten Brust, Luft und Schwung.
