Immer mehr Menschen sind online, immer mehr Firmen, Institutionen und Einrichtungen sind im Netz vertreten und aktiv, immer mehr Einfluß nimmt das Internet auf unser aller Leben - bewusst wie unbewußt. Daher widmete sich auch Hollywood diesem Thema. Wenn man die Filme als Spiegel unserer alltäglichen kleinen und großen Geschichten, als Spiegel unserer Gesellschaft sieht, so kann sich die Filmindustrie einem derart zugkräftigen Thema verständlicherweise nicht verschließen. Und zugkräftig ist das Netz ohne Zweifel: Ganze Branchen sind mittlerweile davon abhängig, es gab einen nie dagewesenen Börsenboom (mit darauffolgendem Absturz - was den Reiz des Netzes jedoch nicht geschmälert hat), immer mehr User surfen durch die digitalen Welten und immer mehr Gegenstände wie Telefone, Fernseher und sogar Küchengeräte verschmelzen mit dem Internet. Also sprangen die großen Produktionsfirmen auf den High-Tech-Zug auf und bedienten unsere cineastischen Wünsche: Mit Kassenschlagern wie "Das Netz", "Matrix" und "Email für Dich" versorgten sie uns vorzugsweise mit bedrohlichen Szenarien, düsteren Zukunftsphantasien, aber auch zartschmelzenden Lovestories. Stets blieben sie damit im jeweiligen gegenwärtigen allgemeinen Trend der westlichen Welt. Diese Arbeit aus dem Jahr 2001 widmete sich einem Thema, welches damals in der Soziologie noch eine absolute Ausnahme darstellte. Umso interessanter ist es zu sehen, wie zu Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends der Stand der Dinge aussah und was sich seitdem verändert hat. Für alle, die sich für die filmischen Abbilder unserer digitalen Gesellschaft interessieren, bietet diese Arbeit einen reichhaltigen Fundus an Eindrücken, Inspirationen und Meinungen.
