Bereits vor dem 9. Jahrhundert pflegten germanische Volksstämme den Kontakt mit der Iberischen Halbinsel und der dort ansässigen kastilisch sprechenden Bevölkerung. Sowohl Deutsche als auch Spanier hegten schon in frühester Zeit Interesse daran, die Sprache des anderen zu lernen, auch wenn dies zunächst nicht auf institutioneller Ebene passierte. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert wird der sogenannte kastilische Dialekt offiziell als Spanisch bezeichnet. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte waren es nicht mehr nur Angehörige des Adels oder Klerus und Wissenschaftler, die Spanisch lernten, sondern auch Kaufleute, Seefahrer, Pilger und einfache Handwerker. Ebenfalls im 16. Jahrhundert trugen unter anderem die Technik des Buchdrucks und damit der Einsatz von Lehr- und Lernmitteln zu einem enormen Aufschwung des Spanischlernens bei. Erste deutsche Handelsschulen, an denen Spanisch gelehrt wurde, wurden im 18. Jahrhundert gegründet, und bis zum 20. Jahrhundert "hatte sich der Spanischunterricht einen kleinen aber soliden Platz im schulischen Fremdsprachenangebot erobert." Heute wird Spanisch nicht nur an Gymnasien, Privat- oder Gesamtschulen unterrichtet, sondern kann auch an Volkshochschulen, Universitäten oder Fachhochschulen studiert werden. Dass das Spanische eine so große Präsenz in fast allen Bereichen des deutschen Unterrichtswesens zeigt, "liegt sowohl an den engen Verbindungen zu Spanien als auch an der wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung (...) Lateinamerikas." In insgesamt 21 Ländern ist das Spanische offizielle Amtssprache und selbst in den USA sprechen 34 von 45 Millionen Hispanos, die dort leben, auch zu Hause regelmäßig Spanisch.
