Da Rodis Vater seither verschollen ist, finden er und seine Mutter Unterschlupf bei Rodis tyrannischem Onkel, der in einem yezidisch kurdischen Dorf in der Turkei lebt. Dort lernt der Junge nicht nur die strikten Regeln seiner Religion in all ihrer Widerspruchlichkeit kennen, sondern erlebt auch hautnah die grausame Unterdruckung der Yeziden in mitten der islamischen Welt. In seinem fesselnden Roman entfuhrt Jan Ilhan Kizilhan den Leser auf eine faszinierende Reise in die yezidische Kultur und gibt tiefe Einblicke in das Schicksal einer religiosen Gemeinschaft, die nicht erst seit dem Vormarsch des IS unter massiver Verfolgung, Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung zu leiden hat. Der dreizehnjahrige Rodi lebt mit seiner Mutter in einem kleinen kurdischen Dorf in der Turkei. Tagtaglich machen ihm die strikten Moralvorstellungen seines herrschsuchtigen Onkels zu schaffen, ein orthodoxer Yezide, der seinen Neffen mit harter Hand zu erziehen versucht. Aber auch die allgegenwartige Unterdruckung der Yeziden durch den turkischen Offizier Ihsan Bey lastet schwer auf Rodis jungen Schultern. Doch die Freundschaft zu der alten yezidischen Erzahlerin Hazal gibt Rodi Halt und lasst ihn immer wieder gegen die strengen Regeln der Altesten aufbegehren. Als das Dorf von einer langen Durre bedroht wird, taucht wie aus dem Nichts ein geheimnisvoller alter Mann auf. Ist er einer der sagenhaften yezidischen Wunderheiler? Und was hat der Alte mit der mythischen Geschichte von Gilgamesch zu tun, mit der die alte Hazal Rodi in ihren Bann gezogen hat? In seinem Roman unternimmt Jan Ilhan Kizilhan einen packenden Streifzug durch die yezidische Kultur der Funfzigerjahre und ruft das Schicksal einer verfolgten Religionsgemeinschaft ins Bewusstsein, auf die die Off entlichkeit erst seit den brutalen Ubergriffen durch den Islamischen Staat im Jahr 2014 aufmerksam wurde.
