Mai 1940 mit der deutschen Wehrmacht uber Den Haag und die Niederlande hereinbricht wie aus heiterem Himmel. Die deutschen Besatzer errichten ein Lugenlabyrinth, mit dem sie immerzu tauschen. Und Bert lernt blitzschnell das gefahrliche Spiel mit der Unwahrheit. Die Deutschen, die nicht ahnen, daß er Jude ist, halten ihn auf der Jagd nach Kunstschatzen fur einen gewitzten, geschaftstuchtigen Partner bei der Ausbeutung der Hollander. Und fur viele Juden wird er wiederum zum Hoffnungstrager, ihr Hab und Gut, Leib und Leben retten zu konnen. Denn es wird bald zur Frage uber Leben und Tod, wer man ist oder vielmehr: wie judisch man ist. Am Ende geht es nur noch um sie selbst – um Bert und seine nicht-judische Frau Lien, um seine Schwester Emmeke und den Schwager Joost, um deren kleines Kind, um ihre alte Mutter. Alle sehr verschieden, suchen sie nach Wegen, sich zu wehren und am Leben zu bleiben. Das Lugenlabyrinth ist eines der ungewohnlichsten Bucher, die je uber die Schoah geschrieben wurden.
