Im letzten Jahrzehnt haben die verschiedenen Prozesse der Digitalisierung immer mehr Bereiche unseres Lebens erfasst und verändert. Dies gilt auch und insbesondere für Unternehmen, bei denen Daten zu einem bedeutenden Produktionsfaktor geworden sind. An der Börsenkapitalisierung der weltweit wertvollsten Unternehmen lässt sich das Potenzial der Digitalisierung ebenfalls ablesen. Die IT und darin enthalten auch die Prozesse und Technologien der Digitalisierung sind für Unternehmen unterschiedlichster Branche in den letzten Jahren ein bedeutender Erfolgsfaktor geworden. Dies bezieht sich einerseits auf die Nutzenseite - Wertsteigerungspotenzial - und andererseits auf die Kostenseite der Informationstechnologie. So betragen die IT-Kosten zwischen ein und zehn Prozent des Umsatzes je nach untersuchter Branche. Aus Unternehmenssicht stellt sich die Herausforderung, die geeignete Strategie im Hinblick auf die Digitalisierung des Unternehmens zu wählen. Dazu ist es für Unternehmen wichtig möglichst genau zu ermitteln, welchen Wertbeitrag sie von den zur Verfügung stehenden Optionen erwarten können. Im Bereich der Findung und Quantifizierung des "Use Case" besteht weiterer Forschungsbedarf. Zur Abbildung dieser wesentlichen Aufgaben stellen die am Unternehmenswert orientierten Werttreibermodelle eine Option dar. In seiner Publikation arbeitet der Autor die Erfolgspotenziale heraus, die Big Data - als ein Teilbereich der Digitalisierung - für ein Industrieunternehmen bietet. Weiter stellt er fest, inwieweit das Werttreiberkonzept von Rappaport dazu geeignet ist, diese Erfolgspotenziale einer Big Data-Strategie zu quantifizieren und in der Unternehmensperformance abzubilden.
