About the Book

Database Management System (DBMS) and Oracle are essentially a part of the curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology and Management. The book is organized into three parts to introduce the theoretical and programming concepts of DBMS. Part I (Basic Concepts and Oracle SQL) deals with DBMS basic, software analysis and design, data flow diagram, ER model, relational algebra, normal forms, SQL queries, functions, subqueries, different types of joins, DCL, DDL, DML, object constraints and security in Oracle. Part II (Application Using Oracle PL/SQL) explains PL/SQL basics, functions, procedures, packages, exception handling, triggers, implicit, explicit and advanced cursors using suitable examples. This part also covers advanced concepts related to PL/SQL, such as collection, records, objects, dynamic SQL and performance tuning. Part III (Advanced Concepts and Technologies) elaborates on advanced database concepts such as query processing, file organization, distributed architecture, backup, recovery, data warehousing, online analytical processing and data mining concepts and their techniques.

All the chapters include a large number of examples. To further reinforce the concepts, numerous objective type questions and workouts are provided at the end of each chapter.

About the Author

PRANAB KUMAR DAS GUPTA, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist in Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). Presently, he is Additional Director in Computer and Communication Wing at Proof and Experimental Establishment, Chandipur. His expertise in development, execution and implementation of projects has immensely helped his organization. A large number of students have completed their project work under his guidance and have been placed in reputed industries and multinational companies. Dr. Das Gupta is also the author of three other books entitled Developing Web Applications Using ASP.NET and Oracle (second edition), Cloud Computing-based Projects Using Distributed Architecture and Oracle Developer 2000: Basics to Implementation, all published by PHI Learning, New Delhi.

P. RADHA KRISHNA, Ph.D., has been in the profession of research, development and technology adoption for more than two decades. He is currently working as a Principal Research Scientist at Infosys Labs, Infosys Limited, Hyderabad, where he is associated with research projects leading to futuristic information management and analytical solutions. Prior to joining Infosys, he served as Faculty at the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology, Hyderabad and as Scientist at National Informatics Centre (Govt. of India), Bhopal. He has conceptualized numerous research projects and was associated with building innovation labs for leading industries. Dr. Krishna has obtained double PhDs (from Osmania University and from IIIT Hyderabad). He has authored/co-authored five books and has published around hundred articles. His research interests include databases, data mining, data warehousing, data science and electronic contracts and services.
