About the Book

The present book is translation of the Kauravi folk theatre of Dayachand Mayna, one of Haryana’s most poetically robbed poets. At least 30 of his poems are stolen and published by the name of other Haryanvi writers, i.e., Mehar Singh. Structurally, the book is divided into two parts: the first part is academic criticism of those editors who robbed Mayna’s poetry, and the second part is the translation of his seven famous poetic plays in English. The first part is an attempt to expose the nexus through which Jaat singers and editors steal his poetry to build the reputation of a Jaat poet, Mehar Singh. However, Mehar Singh is not responsible for any poetic loot as he died in 1944, but the astute editors of the volumes of Mehar Singh do the immoral and unethical task of stealing. This is how Dayachand is excluded from the art of canon making, and Mehar Singh is over-glorified on the base of poetic heist. Poverty, Caste and class were the reasons for his exclusion from academia, but the foremost reason was the non-publication of his works. Hence, there was an opportunity for the singers and editors to steal the poetry and sing or publish by the name of other poets. Simultaneously, it defines how the “ragni” (tr poems) competition became the toast of Haryanvi life, especially after the Battle of 1971 when nationalism was at its peak. The competition gives a chance to singers to sing the poetry of one poet by the name of others on the stage as only a handful of Haryanvi poets were published at that time. This stage singing was later recorded in audio cassettes. Finally, by giving the reference to the cassettes, several edited books were published. Thus, it is a literary heist to steal the poetic bank of one and deposit it in the account of another poet. The second part is the academic translation of Mayna’s poetic drama from Haryanvi to English.
