Waar mensen samenwerken zijn confrontaties, waar organisaties veranderen is weerstand. We weten al eeuwen dat je confrontaties het beste maar kunt aangaan, en weerstand het beste maar serieus kunt nemen. En dat is lastig! Organisaties besteden verrassend veel tijd en moeite aan juist het vermijden van confrontaties, conflicten, ruzies, en aan juist het bestrijden van weerstand. Uit angst voor gezichtsverlies, weerzin tegen 'gedoe', schrik dat plannen en ambities sneuvelen, zoeken we toch liever, conflict mijdend, vaak de weg van de minste weerstand.

Er is veel managementliteratuur over hoe je wel constructief kunt werken met conflict en weerstand. Vaak staat daarin de analyse centraal van wat er kennelijk speelt, en het proces om daarmee om te gaan. Veel minder prominent wordt beschreven hoe het eigenlijk is met de mensen die bij de confrontatie betrokken zijn. Wat ze voelen, wat ze vrezen, waar ze van schrikken, wat ze willen, hoe hun lichaam reageert, hun intuïtie, hun gevoelens van veiligheid, zelfvertrouwen, emotie. Kortom, hoe het eraan toegaat in de emotionele onderlaag van betrokkenen. Om toe te komen aan analyse en processen bij confrontatie is eerst inzicht nodig in die emotionele onderlaag.

Want wie boos is ziet te weinig, wie bibberig is houdt te veel afstand, wie geschrokken is vecht, vlucht of bevriest, wie zich onveilig voelt duikt; allemaal geen gunstige startposities om een confrontatie te analyseren of processtappen te volgen. Maar zo hoeft ook niet.

Inzichten uit persoonlijkheidspsychologie en neurologie helpen ons de emotionele onderlaag van onszelf en anderen in kaart te krijgen, razendsnel zelfs, en daarmee vele malen effectiever te worden in het constructief werken met conflict en weerstand. Want naast angst is er moed, naast aarzeling vrijmoedigheid, naast bibberigheid nieuwsgierigheid, naast een energiedip het oprechte plezier in samenwerken en samen een verandering tot een succes maken.

Dit boek is voor iedereen die graag vanuit inzicht in de emotionele onderlaag leert werken met conflict en weerstand.
