Ce texte de 1840 expose les idées démocratiques innovantes de l'abbé de Lamennais. En effet, il développe dans cet ouvrage des idées socialistes et démocratiques du message évangélique et il sera dés lors considéré comme révolutionnaire par ses pairs. Véritable précurseur mais également témoin de son époque, il nous livre un texte fort et virulent sur le capitalisme et ses conséquences esclavagistes. Après un demi-siècle de lutte contre la tyrannie féodale et royale, après tant d'efforts et de sacrifices, tant de combats pour affranchir l'humanité d'un joug écrasant, voilà où nous en sommes.Peuple, peuple, réveille-toi enfin ! Esclaves, levez-vous, rompez vos fers; ne souffrez pas que l'on dégrade plus longtemps en vous le nom d'homme ! Voudriez-vous qu'un jour, meurtris par les fers que vous leur aurez légués, vos enfants disent: Nos pères ont été plus lâches que les esclaves romains.
