About the Book

English summary: The present study examines modernity as an unknown quantity that hides behind multiple masks, sliding from one meaning to another according to context. The author limits his study to the period between 1823, when Balzac invented the term, to 1863 and the beginning of the French Second Empire. Without celebrating any particular artist, or offering a particular definition, this work sheds light on the latent, underlying esthetics and ideas of the period that led to the emergence of multiple modernities.
