About the Book

George Bosco has it good: a pension from the NYPD, a ranch nestled in the Black Hills, the perfect teaching position and the woman he has loved for as long as he can remember. And he's healthy - until he runs into Borden Cantrell, the Bully of Quickwater. Bosco is ambushed but he heals and is deputized to arrest Cantrell. The two meet at high noon on a hot summer day. Things get pear-shaped during that confrontation: Cantrell is killed, by one of the many people he has terrorized over the years, and Bosco now has to identify and arrest the killer. But no one is talking. Bosco's investigation uncovers secrets and intrigues in the lands of the Lakota, from the gaming industry in Deadwood to 'Greenie' activists to the private affairs of ranchers and townspeople of the Hills. It all comes crashing to an end during a dramatic denouement in an animal sanctuary.

He was the senior staff writer for the Diocese of Charleston and wrote for newspapers and magazines, receiving numerous awards from the South Carolina Press Association and the Catholic Press Association. He graduated with a BS from Niagara University and an MS from Loyola University of New Orleans. His four supplemental readers were published by Houghton Mifflin in 2008, the same year Tumblar House released his non-fiction book about the founding of a private high school, "St. Joe's Remarkable Journey." Barra's middle-grade adventure novel, "The Secret of Maggie's Swamp," came out from Brownridge Publishing last year; his adult mystery, "Crimson Ring," is available on Amazon.com. "A Death in the Hills," was short-listed for the Tuscany Prize before he signed a publishing contract with Argus Enterprises International. Paul Barra and his wife Joan have eight children and live with their dogs, alpacas and chickens in Reidville, SC. He is a veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" and the Combat Action ribbon. Barra is currently working on another adventure tale for children and another novel for adults.
