About the Book

The first part of Caeculus III contains four articles on Greek archaeology: in the first Marja Vink studies the quantity of actual archaeological remains from a number of important Greek key sites during the period 800-500 BC trying to solve the question "The Archaic Period in Greece: Another Dark Age?" Secondly, John Osborne deliberates on "The Spartan Exception?" and discusses the relatively rich remains from 7thC BC Sparta. Thirdly, Edward Ch. van der Vliet looks at the historical sources for the 7thC BC in Greece in his contribution "The 7thC BC as a Dark Age: A Historian's Perspective." Finally, Mieke Prent tries to answer Coldstream's question about the absence of 6thC BC archaeological remains in Crete, with: "The 6thC BC in Crete: The Best Candidate for Being a Dark Age?" The second half of the volume contains articles on Italian archaeology: in the first Tsjeard Hoekstra discusses the biographies of late Bronze/early Iron Age hoards and metal grave gifts in a paper titled "Life and Death in South Etruria. The Social Rhetoric of Cemeteries and Hoards." With a study entitled "Dark Age or Ferro I? A Tentative Answer for the Sibaritide and Metapontine Plains" Marianne Kleibrink tries to reach a better understanding of the transitional period from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age in South Italian archaeology. Jelle Bouma and Elisabeth van 't Lindenhout compare the evidence in Latium from settlements with that from cult places for the Archaic and Republican periods in "Light in Dark Age Latium. Evidence from Settlements and Cult Places." Douwe Yntema discusses the indigenous developments in 5thC BC South-Eastern Italy, the region he knows so well, with "Constructing a Dark Age. The 5thC BC in South-Eastern Italy." Peter Attema with Berndt-Jan Haagsma and Jan Delvigne report on the results from yet another of their Pontine surveys with "Survey and Sediments in the Ager of Ancient Setia (Lazio, Central Italy). The Dark Age Concept from a Landscape Perspective." The last contribution in this volume, by Marjan C. Galestin, treats aspects of Frisian archaeology in the nothern part of the Netherlands with the title "The Dark Age Concept and the Frisian Terp Area. The Transition from the Roman to the Medieval Period."
