About the Book

Decade of the Brain is comprised of linked poems that follow a newly-naturalized American citizen who, after a major auto accident, suffers from post-concussive memory loss.

The collection explores the aftermath of trauma and is an odyssey of/into what it means to recover--physically and mentally. The journey is not straightforward, linear, or arced toward "good health," "full recovery," or a return to "normal." It does not triumph into "American." We witness a speaker whose life, as one of the poem's epigraphs states, "flows on, resembling life" (Octavio Paz).

The speaker makes clear the "othering" one feels in relation to their body, brain, consciousness, treatment, and their home in an America that caters toward whiteness. Joseph asks us to contemplate our own minds and all their oddities, what it means to heal, to perceive, and gives us a reminder of how self-contained and yet interconnected we are despite our brains and perspectives. This is a collection that tries to pinpoint the moment when before crosses into after; it's a collection that explores what it means to be and become an American in this country.
