About the Author:

Mario Melletti is an Italian free-lance wildlife biologist and member of the African Buffalo Initiative Group and Wild Pig Specialist Group both part of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. During his PhD studies, he was affiliated with the Department of Animal and Human Biology, at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Italy and with the Department of Conservation Biology of the Estación Biólogica de Doñana (CSIC-EBD) Seville, Spain. For 10 years he has been studying the ecology and behavior of the forest buffalo in Central Africa. Mario has conducted research on a number of other large mammals collaborating to several projects and surveys on both mammals and birds in Africa and Europe. He worked in several African countries including Burkina Faso, C.A.R., Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. He started to collaborate with the Cambridge University Press in 2010 as editor of a book series on conservation and management of large mammals. He has authored a total of six books and about 60 scientific publications.

Stefano Focardi is senior researcher at the Institute for Complex Systems of the CNR in Florence where he leads the team of large mammals' research and he is professor of Vertebrate Zoology at the University of Florence, Italy and invited professor at the University of Lyon, France. Moreover, he is going to lead a collaboration with the INRA in Toulouse, France. He authored 110 scientific papers and 26 documents related to environmental management. He is the scientific coordinator of EUROBOAR, a European organization to study the biology of the wild boar and an active member of the EURODEER INITIATIVE. He is a specialist in the biology of roe deer and fallow deer and has organized several international meetings of specialists on these two Cervids species. His current research interests are relative to demography of ungulates, movement ecology of birds and mammals and population assessment.
