Trois des discours presentes dans ce volume ont pour plaideur Apollodore, le fils et heritier du banquier Pasion. Dans le Contre Timothee, Apollodore attaque le stratege athenien Timothee afin qu'il reconnaisse des dettes dues a la banque de Pasion qu'il n'avait pas acquittees. Ce texte est l'un des rares a l'epoque classique a nous fournir des donnees sur la tenue des livres des banques et nous revele un etat deja tres avance de la technique bancaire a Athenes. Les plaidoyers civils de Demosthene contiennent aussi des informations precieuses sur le systeme fiscal athenien. Deux discours, le Contre Polycles et le discours Sur la couronne trierarchique ont trait aux liturgies et aux impots exceptionnels tels que la proeisphora. Le premier des deux plaidoyers, ou Apollodore est encore le plaideur, nous renseigne sur le fonctionnement des trierarchies, cette charge qui imposait aux plus riches citoyens atheniens de payer l'equipement d'un navire. Certains discours comme le Contre Conon presentent un charme pittoresque: dans cette affaire, le plaideur Ariston poursuit en justice les fils de Conon avec lesquels il a eu des demeles lors de son service civique et qui l'ont agresse sur l'agora. Enfin, le Contre Callicles nous donne a voir la vie quotidienne dans le monde rural athenien: l'affaire concerne un differend entre deux paysans sur une question d'ecoulement d'eau. Le defendeur, Tisias, avait construit un mur pour proteger son domaine. Un jour d'orage, le champ de son voisin Callicles fut endommage. Pour cette raison, Callicles reclame une indemnite au fils de Tisias. Tous ces discours figurent dans le present volume dans le texte original grec accompagne de la traduction francaise de Louis Gernet. Chacun des plaidoyers est accompagne d'une notice de l'editeur qui aidera le lecteur a en saisir les enjeux juridiques et historiques.
