About the Book

English summary: During the time of the so-called "Tetrarchy" at the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th century A.D., a period which also brought with it a redistribution of authority and a decentralization of power, new palaces appeared in the numerous cities that were, or at least served as, imperial residences. This phenomenon is true for the city of Trier (Augusta Treverorum), which most likely was promoted by Hadrian in the 2nd century A.D. to serve as the quarters of the provincial administrator of Gallia Belgica. In the period between 286 and 293 A.D., Trier was clearly the most important seat of Emperor Maximian, which led to a heavy investment in building his imperial residence. Ulrike Wulf-Rheidt shows, on the basis of research over all known details about the late antique imperial palace in Trier, that there were many similarities with the palace of the Roman emperor on the Palatine Hill in Rome. Therefore, the Circus, the great "Aula Palatina," as well as the newly constructed palace baths are located in this area of Trier. A new consideration of the imperial residence at Trier, as reflected in the buildings on the Palatine Hill as well as comparable late-antique palace complexes, makes the point clear that the palace in Rome was not just the inspiration for other imperial residences, but that it should even be surpassed: the palaces aimed to be clearly worthy "of the heavens and the stars." The imperial residence at Trier also strove to become one of the greatest and most ambitious building projects for an imperial residence which is known from the period of Late Antiquity.
