About the Book

En entreprenant de raconter les premiers temps de l'histoire de Rome, Denys d'Halicarnasse, historien et professeur de rhetorique d'origine grecque, s'inscrivait pleinement dans le projet augusteen de restauration des valeurs de l'ancienne societe romaine. Bien que traitant l'histoire de la cite latine, Denys demeure neanmoins pleinement grec, defendant le courant litteraire que l'on nomma atticisme par sa volonte d'imiter le style des grands auteurs grecs des Ve et IVe siecles avant J.-C. tels que Demosthene. Par cette demarche originale dans les premiers temps du principat, l'historien avait pour objectif de mieux faire connaitre Rome a ses compatriotes helleniques. De ce point de vue, le livre III de ses Antiquites Romaines retient particulierement l'attention. Dans un recit qui oscille entre legende et histoire, Denys y relate les regnes des rois romains Tullus Hostilius, Ancus Marcius et Tarquin l'Ancien. Si beaucoup d'evenements relates dans le regne du premier relevent de la fable, tels que le celebre affrontement des Horaces et des Curiaces qui inspira Corneille, le nom de Tarquin est quant a lui plus atteste par l'archeologie comme en temoignent les vestiges du Circus Maximus ou du temple de Jupiter Capitolin. Le recit de l'historien fait dans ce livre la part belle aux guerres qu'entretient Rome avec ses cites voisines. Le regne de Tullus Hostilius met ainsi fin au conflit qui oppose l'Vrbs a sa metropole Albe. Les enjeux diplomatiques de cette opposition sont presentes par Denys dans des termes qui ne sont pas sans rappeler la presentation des conflits entre metropoles et colonies chez Thucydide. En cela, l'historien paracheve sa volonte d'inscrire l'histoire de Rome dans une filiation hellenique. L'edition du livre III des Antiquites Romaines dans la Collection des Universites de France comprend le texte grec de Denys d'Halicarnasse accompagne de la traduction en francais de Jacques-Hubert Sautel. Le volume s'ouvre par une introduction dans laquelle est expose l'interet historique du recit et ou est retracee la tradition manuscrite du texte.
