Avec le livre VI de ses Antiquites Romaines, Denys d'Halicarnasse, historien grec et professeur de rhetorique de la periode augusteenne, entreprend le recit des evenements qui eurent lieu au cours des annees 497 a 493, selon la chronologie adoptee par l'auteur (qui differe legerement de celle adoptee par Tite-Live). Cette periode, qui s'etend sur cinq consulats, est marquee par les deux evenements majeurs que sont la bataille du lac Regille opposant Rome aux cites latines et la secession de la plebe sur le mont Sacre, laquelle aboutit a l'institution du tribunat de la plebe. La victoire des Romains au lac Regille marque l'echec definitif de la famille royale des Tarquins, allies aux cites latines, pour reprendre le pouvoir a Rome. Le vieux roi achevera par la suite sa vie, exile dans la cite campanienne de Cumes. La seconde section du livre est centree sur la montee progressive des tensions entre plebe et patriarcat a Rome. Le soulevement de la plebe est presente comme un drame qui s'acheve par le discours de Menenius Agrippa, morceau d'eloquence comprenant la celebre allegorie des membres et de l'estomac. Denys a recours pour decrire le conflit interne a la cite romaine a des concepts herites de la pensee grecque. Ainsi, la secession de la plebe est decrite comme une stasis qui rappelle le recit des massacres fratricides des Corcyreens durant l'ete 427 avant J.-C. chez Thucydide.L'edition du tome VI des Antiquites Romaines de Denys d'Halicarnasse dans la Collection des Universites de France comprend le texte grec de l'historien accompagne de la traduction de Jacques-Hubert Sautel. Le texte est precede d'une riche introduction dans laquelle sont abordes divers aspects interessants de l'oeuvre de l'historien, tels que le personnel politique present dans le recit, le vocabulaire employe pour decrire les evenements politiques et l'interet historique et litteraire de l'oeuvre.
