About the Book

English summary: Volume III of the Priene Series from the German Archeological Institute (DAI) focuses on the late-classical Temple of Athena at Priene in Asia Minor. Priene was an important center for Ionian architecture until the Ionian uprising against Persia caused a nearly century-long hiatus in new building projects. This temple was designed by Pytheos, the architect made famous by his design for the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. The Temple of Athena is important not only for its association with Pytheos but also because it is a major example of the Ionian Renaissance that took place in the 4th century BCE, which made Priene an important center of building-arts in the late classical era of Greek architecture on the eve of the Hellenistic era. This work offers a detail representation of the temple including descriptions and photographs as well as a consideration of the reception of Pytheos' work down to modern exhibitions in London and Berlin. I 1, 12; VII Praef.
