Der Deutsch-Danische Krieg von 1864 besaß eine lange Vorgeschichte im Rahmen des heraufziehenden Nationalitatenkonflikts und der komplizierten Frage des dynastischen Erbrechts in den Elbherzogtumern. 1460 hatte der Vertrag von Ripen geregelt, daß Schleswig und Holstein ungeteilt und in Personalunion mit der danischen Krone vereint bleiben sollten. Das Londoner Protokoll von 1852 garantierte den territorialen Bestand Danemarks, legte aber fest, daß Schleswig verfassungsrechtlich nicht enger an Danemark zu binden sei als Holstein. Als Danemark diesen Vertrag nicht langer einhalten wollte, kam es zum Krieg. Der Deutsch-Danische Krieg von 1864 ist ein Paradebeispiel fur einen noch weitgehend unabhangig von außeren Einflussen herbeigefuhrten „klassischen“ Kabinettskrieg im Stil der Geheimdiplomatie des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Die militarischen Auseinandersetzungen brachten schließlich den Untergang des jahrhundertealten danischen Gesamtstaats und forcierten in Danemark die Nationalisierung des Landes. Fur die Deutschen brachte der Sieg uber Danemark die von der deutschen Nationalbewegung ertraumte Loslosung der Elbherzogtumer von der danischen Herrschaft, aber es kam nicht zur Bildung eines neuen Staates Schleswig-Holstein als Glied des Deutschen Bundes. Die Herzogtumer fielen an die erfolgreichen deutschen Fuhrungsmachte Osterreich und Preußen. Schleswig-Holstein bildete schließlich den Anlaß, den entscheidenden Kampf um die Vorherrschaft in Deutschland zwischen diesen beiden Machten auszufechten. Preußen blieb siegreich und verleibte sich die Elbherzogtumer ein. Die Erfolge uber Danemark 1864 und Osterreich 1866 legten die Grundlagen fur die Einigung Deutschlands, die schließlich nach dem triumphalen Feldzug uber Frankreich 1870/71 verwirklicht wurde. Das Buch behandelt alle relevanten politischen und militarischen Aspekte, die zum Verstandnis von Vorgeschichte, Ablauf und Folgen des Konfliktes notwendig sind. Außerdem wird auf das seinerzeitige Kriegsvolkerrecht und die Bedeutung dieses Feldzuges fur dessen Entwicklung bis in die Gegenwart eingegangen. In einem weiteren Kapitel wird das Nachleben des Krieges in der Erinnerungskultur der beteiligten Nationen thematisiert. Zahlreiche Bilder und Karten veranschaulichen diesen Konflikt im Norden Europas, der sich im Jahr 2014 zum 150. Mal jahrt. Das Buch enthalt ein Vorwort des Wiener Historikers Lothar Hobelt.
