Johann Adam Schall von Bell S.J. - geb. 1592 in Koln, gest. 1666 in Beijing - lebte und wirkte fast funf Jahrzehnte als Missionar in China. Er gilt als einer der einflussreichsten Gelehrten des 17. Jahrhunderts, der dank seiner hervorragenden Ausbildung und Gelehrsamkeit wichtige Disziplinen der europaischen Naturwissenschaften im chinesischen Kaiserreich bekannt machte und damit auch den jugendlichen ersten Kaiser der neuen Qing-Dynastie beeindruckte. Doch Schalls Kenntnisse und wissenschaftlichen Erfolge brachten ihm nicht nur Bewunderung ein, sondern erregten auch Neidgefuhle und Rivalitatsstreitigkeiten unter den einheimischen Fachkollegen, die ihn diverser Vergehen beschuldigten. All dies endete in einem mehrjahrigen Prozess, in dem die obersten Gerichtsinstanzen den bereits todkranken Schall in mehreren Anklagepunkten und Verfahren zum Tode verurteilten - eine Entscheidung, die spater jedoch abgemildert wurde. Martin Gimm stellt in seinem neuen Buch Leben und Wirken von Adam Schall vor und zeichnet das Prozessgeschehen in seinen Anklagepunkten nach. Als einer der schwerwiegendsten Vorwurfe erweist sich dabei die angeblich absichtliche Fehlbestimmung des Bestattungstermins fur den jung verstorbenen Prinzen Rong, den der Kaiser als seinen Thronfolger auserwahlt hatte. In diesem Zusammenhang werden die historischen Begleitumstande beschrieben und die heute noch zuganglichen Materialien zum Verfahren des Prinzenbegrabnisses und zu den betroffenen Personen prasentiert. Die vom Kaiser verfasste Grabinschrift fur Prinz Rong wird in Ubersetzung vorgelegt und in die Diskussion uber die Rangfolge des Prinzen Rong eingebettet.
