Von den Brudern Grimm ist viel die Rede. Ihr Bruder Ferdinand, der ein eigenes Werk von Fabeln und Marchen zusammentrug, ist heute vergessen. Als »schwarzes Schaf« der Familie endete er als 55-Jahriger, elend und verlassen. Nach der kulturhistorisch-philologischen Spurensuche nach Goethes unbekanntem Großvater (Monsieur Gothe, Band 391) nehmen sich Heiner Boehncke und Hans Sarkowicz die unausgeleuchteten Winkel der Familie Grimm vor. Sie entdecken, nach dem »Malerbruder « Ludwig Emil (Folioband, 2015): Ferdinand, den Unglucksraben der Marchen- und Sagensammlerfamilie. Ferdinand Grimm (geboren 1790 in Hanau und fruh gestorben in Wolfenbuttel) war der bunte Vogel, ein scheckiger Unglucksrabe unter den sechs Geschwistern der Familie. Auf dem Gebiet der Literatur und Volkserzahlungen zu reussieren, war sein Wunsch und Ziel: Er sammelte und publizierte Marchen und Sagen, war ein großer Kenner der Schriftkultur seiner Zeit, schrieb wunderbare Briefe. Doch die »Bruder Grimm« blieben immer nur Jacob und Wilhelm. Ferdinand fehlte nicht nur der unbandige Lern- und Arbeitseifer seiner beruhmten Bruder, ihm fehlte immer auch das Geld. Jacob und Wilhelm unterstutzten ihn in einer Art repressiver Fursorge. Sie gaben ihm Geld, aber standig auch strenge, wenn nicht herablassende Ratschlage. In seinem unglucklichen, eigenbrotlerischen Leben half er auch seinen Brudern beim Zusammentragen von Sagen und Marchen. Er war ein umfassend orientierter Sammler, der auch – anders als seine Bruder – zu den Leuten ging und ihnen bei ausgedehnten Wanderungen zuhorte. Seine drei Anthologien veroffentlichte er unter verschiedenen Pseudonymen, wohl, um seinen Brudern nicht ins Gehege zu kommen. So ist ein immenser, weitgehend unbekannter Schatz entstanden, aus dem in diesem Buch geschopft wird. Der neueste Streich des Duos Boehncke und Sarkowicz versammelt Sagen, Marchen, Briefe und andere Texte neben einem ausfuhrlichen biographischen Essay, der dem »fremden Ferdinand« endlich Gerechtigkeit widerfahren lasst: Denn Ferdinand Philipp Grimm, der am Ende seines Lebens in die Bibliotheksstadt Wolfenbuttel gezogen war, brachte die Nahe der Bucher kein Gluck.
