Weltberuhmt wurde sie durch die Literatur: In Alexandre Dumas' 'Die Kameliendame' tragt die morbid-schone Heldin den Namen der prachtigen Blume. Nach West- und Mitteleuropa kam die Kamelie im 18. Jahrhundert. Exotische Pflanzen zu zuchten war vor allem ein Hobby des Hochadels. Doch auch zur Innerlichkeitskultur des entstehenden Burgertums gehorte bald das Interesse fur die Schonheit von Pflanzen und die Geheimnisse der Natur. Garten, so klein auch immer sie sein mochten, wurden zu Refugien der Menschen in einer industrialisierten und urbanisierten modernen Gesellschaft - gerade in Deutschland. Vor diesem kulturhistorischen Hintergrund zeichnet Mustafa Haikal die Geschichte der beruhmten sachsischen Gartnerfamilie Seidel nach. An ihrem Anfang steht Johann Heinrich Seidel, der Hofgartner in Dresden war. Im August 1894 besuchte ihn Goethe, und beide kamen mehrmals ins 'vertraute Gesprach' uber die offenbaren Naturgeheimnisse. Seidel wurde zum Ahnherren einer Dynastie sachsischer Gartner - vier seiner Sohne ergriffen den Beruf des Vaters, zwei Tochter heirateten angesehene Gartner. Dank der Kamelie entwickelte sich die von Friedrich Jacob Seidel 1813 in Dresden gegrundete Handelsgartnerei zur ersten deutschen Exportgartnerei, uberstand zwei Weltkriege und endete erst unter der Verwaltung der Treuhand. Noch heute kann die Seidelsche Kamelienpracht in den Botanischen Sammlungen von Pirna-Zuschendorf ganz in der Nahe von Dresden besichtigt werden. Welche Attraktivitat dieser exotische Baum noch immer besitzt, zeigt sich an der uber 200 Jahre alten Kamelie im Pillnitzer Schlosspark, deren bis zu 35000 karmesinrot leuchtende Bluten jahrlich Tausende von Besuchern anlocken.
