In einer Art publizistischen Kampagne begleiten viele hundert politische Lieder und gereimte Gedichte die zahllosen kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen und Fehden des Spatmittelalters und der fruhen Neuzeit. Es sind politische Propagandatexte, die in der Regel von Hofen, Stadtraten oder Kanzleien verbreitet wurden und zahlreiche Argumente aus offiziellen Dokumenten oder Chroniken aufgreifen. Diese Texte verhohnen den Gegner, bestarken die eigenen Anhanger und versuchen, unentschlossene Dritte fur die eigene Sache zu gewinnen.Die Lieder und Reimpaarspruche nehmen in tendenzioser Weise auf einen konkreten Krieg oder eine Fehde Bezug und versuchen, die offentliche Meinung uber den behandelten Vorfall in eine bestimmte Richtung zu lenken, um so zur Identifikation mit der eigenen Position und zur Distanzierung vom Gegner aufzurufen.Die Lieder und Spruche wurden in verschiedene Konfliktarten eingeteilt: Stadt-Adels-Konflikte, inneradlige Fehden, eidgenossische Kriege, Hussitenkriege, den Bauernkrieg von 1525, die Turkenkriege und den Schmalkaldischen Krieg (1546/47). Die Mehrzahl der Ereignisdichtungen verfahrt bei allen Unterschieden im einzelnen nach einem gangigen Argumentationsschema, um ihre Position im Konflikt abzusichern: Sie bemuhen sich, den eigenen Standort als legitim und gottgewollt darzustellen, wahrend der Gegner erkennbar gegen das Recht und Gottes Willen verstosst. Krieg erscheint als geeignetes Mittel, um Recht und Ordnung zu wahren oder Wiederherzustellen und den Gegner fur seine Untaten zu bestrafen. Auffallig ist dabei das Fehlen einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phanomen Krieg und seinen Folgen fur die betroffenen Menschen.Das letzte Kapitel befasst sich mit der agitatorischen Wirkung der politischen Ereignisdichtung, mit ihrem Umfeld und ihrer Funktion. Es sind zahlreiche Antwort- und Gegendichtungen uberliefert sowie Nachrichten uber harte Strafen fur Verfasser und Verbreiter der Texte und uber Klagen verschiedener Kriegsherren, die sich von Vorwurfen in ihrem Leumund geschadigt fuhlten.
